PIN limits

A six-digit PIN has one million possible values before policy restrictions. That can be adequate only when a device or service enforces strict retry limits and secure recovery. A short PIN is not equivalent to a high-entropy password.

Avoid reuse

Do not reuse banking, device-unlock, voicemail or access-control PINs. Do not publish or share generated PINs through insecure channels. The protection depends heavily on the system that verifies the PIN.

How much search space does a PIN have?

A random six-digit PIN has one million possible values if leading zeros are allowed. Four digits have only ten thousand. That space can be acceptable only when the verifying device or service strictly limits retries, detects abuse and has secure recovery.

PINs are not account passwords

A device PIN may unlock a hardware-protected credential on that device; it is not necessarily sent to a remote service. Context matters. Do not use a short generated PIN as a substitute for a website password, vault master credential or encryption key.

Avoid memorable and reused PINs

Dates, repeated digits, keypad shapes and known defaults are prioritized by attackers. Generate independently, use the longest supported length and keep banking, device, voicemail and access-control PINs separate.
