TikTok password guidance

TikTok Account Safety currently recommends 12 to 15 characters with upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols, and a different password for every account. The account interface is authoritative for accepted input. Use random generation rather than personal names or trends.

TikTok also suggests frequent changes. Broader NIST guidance discourages arbitrary periodic rotation without compromise evidence. Follow an organizational rule where required, but always change after disclosure or suspicious access.

Set up a TikTok passkey

TikTok supports passkeys on compatible devices and account configurations. The passkey can use Apple or Google credential storage and the device unlock method. Review the saved passkey and recovery options before relying on one device.

Turn on 2-step verification

TikTok recommends 2-step verification to protect logins from new or unfamiliar devices. Select at least two methods where the interface requires or permits it. Protect the linked email and phone because they may be involved in verification and recovery.

Review trusted devices and security activity

Remove devices you no longer use or recognize. Investigate unexpected login prompts, messages, profile changes or posted content. Revoke third-party access that is no longer necessary.

Creator and business account precautions

Use individual team access where supported rather than sharing a password. Protect connected advertising, shop and business accounts. Record who owns recovery methods and revoke agency or contractor access when work ends.

Recover a compromised TikTok account

Use TikTok support and account recovery from the official app or site, change the password from a trusted device, review devices and security methods, secure the linked email, and replace any reused credential. Warn contacts if the account distributed scams.
