What password does Instagram accept?

Instagram can update account validation and does not provide a stable public table covering every accepted character and maximum length. Treat the current Accounts Center password-change form as authoritative. Third-party lists often repeat old minimums without documenting current tests or official sources.

Start with a long random value from a password manager and adjust only if the official form rejects it.

Use a separate password from Facebook and email

Connected Meta accounts are convenient, but the underlying credentials should remain unique. Your email password must also be different because email can reset Instagram. Avoid a brand-name base plus a different suffix for each network.

Enable two-factor authentication

Use the strongest method offered in Accounts Center. An authentication app is generally preferable to a text message when a phishing-resistant method is unavailable. Save recovery codes outside the phone and verify the backup route before an emergency.

Protect creator and business accounts

Review linked Facebook pages, professional-account access, third-party apps and active sessions. Use individual authorized accounts rather than sharing one password among staff or agencies. Remove access promptly when a relationship ends.

Recognize recovery and phishing risks

Attackers imitate copyright notices, verification offers, brand deals and support messages. Open account settings directly rather than using a message link. Do not send backup codes or approve a login you did not start.

Recover a compromised Instagram account

Use the official Instagram recovery process, secure the registered email, change the password, remove unknown sessions and connected apps, and review profile changes and sent messages. Warn contacts if the account sent scams.
